A mouthguard is perhaps the most important and necessary piece of protective equipment in martial arts because an injury to the jaw or teeth can happen very easily. Such an injury can result in easily knocked out teeth or in a lot of pain, leaving you with high dentistry costs. However, such injuries can be avoided very simply, easily, and inexpensively by wearing a mouthguard.

* SHAPE & MATERIAL - The QUANTUM MX1 mouthguard is made of a very flexible material and the shape is very spacious, which allows enough material for precise fitting of every smallest angle of the teeth. It has an ergonomic shape that very precisely reflects the anatomy of the jaw and can therefore be perfectly molded to the teeth. The central tooth groove is extra narrow in the front area for, which exactly reflects the shape of the thin front and sharp incisors. At the back, in the area of the molars, it is significantly wider, which corresponds to our jaw anatomy. The base between the upper and lower jaw is also extra thick. This means that when fitting, if you bite firmly into the mouthguard, there is still enough material for the teeth of the upper and lower jaw to clearly "bite" into the mouthguard. A deep imprint is necessary so that the teeth sit stably in the mouthguard and the halves of the jaw do not slip sideways when hit. The lateral slipping of the lower jaw is often the reason for dangerous injuries to the muscles and ligaments of the teeth. The shape of this mouthguard is thick enough on the outside that you can press part of the flexible material when fitting the mouthguard (with your fingers) onto the upper jaw and upwards even over the gums and downwards onto the teeth of the lower jaw to get more protection. The more area covered by the mouthguard, the less you feel the power of a punch once it lands. The flexible material is also thick enough on the inside to be able to press it firmly against the teeth and sometimes even against the gums when fitting. Pressing the material so precisely against the jaw is very important because this is the only way for the mouthguard to fit well and not fall out when the mouth is opened. The more contact surface the mouthguard has with the teeth, gums and sometimes even the palate and the closer and more precisely it fits, the safer it is.

* FITTING A MOUTHGUARD - A newly purchased mouthguard has only a roughly pre-formed and pre-bent shape with an outline for the teeth of the upper jaw. It is not yet finished and ready for use. Almost every mouthguard must first be warmed up in very warm water and made adaptable. By warming it up in hot water, the mouth guard becomes soft and flexible and can be individually fitted to each jaw and adjusted to the shape of your own teeth by pressing with your fingers. Although almost every mouthguard has precise instructions on how to adjust it, it usually takes several attempts before you can adjust a mouthguard reasonably well. It is therefore advisable for anyone who has never done this before to first find out from reliable sources and videos how to fit a mouthguard, which important steps to take and which potential mistakes to avoid. Luckily, a mouthguard can usually be adjusted a number of times before it either fits well or is so deformed that it is no longer usable. However, advice from a trusted dealer or an experienced fighter or trainer (who has a lot of experience fitting mouthguards) is the best way to avoid making often simple mistakes.

* ADJUSTING THE QUANTUM MX1 MOUTHGUARD - The Quantum MX1 Mouthguard, like any other mouthguard, must first be fitted to your teeth before it can be worn. You should proceed as follows and follow these steps:

1. It is best to bring the water to a boil in a kettle and then pour it into a small container that the mouthguard fits in (e.g. a bowl). Then you should wait about 3-5 minutes until the water temperature drops to about 80-90°. Then you should put the mouthguard in the hot water for about 60-90 seconds.

Note: If the mouthguard bent and deformed significantly in the hot water, then it was in the water too long or the water was too hot. The mouthguard then becomes more difficult to adjust because it becomes too flexible and too unstable. However, if after removing it from the hot water it is so hard that it cannot be adjusted to the denture with pressure, then it was in the hot water too briefly or the water was too cold.

2. While the mouthguard is in the hot water, you could rinse your mouth with warm to hot water to prepare your teeth for the heat of the mouthguard. The teeth are very sensitive to heat and without this procedure, the approx. 80-90° high mouthguard temperature when fitting can be felt as a painful and uncomfortable temperature shock for the teeth. You also have to keep in mind that the temperature of the mouthguards is often so high that you often have to accept slight burns to your gums.

Note: Many manufacturers' instructions for fitting mouthguards state that you should cool the mouthguard under cold water immediately after removing it from the hot water so as not to burn your gums. Although this notice relieves the manufacturers of responsibility and they cannot be accused of burning their mouths, the mouthguard very often becomes too cold and too hard and cannot be easily pressed and adapted to the teeth. As a result, the protection and grip are significantly worse.

3. Immediately after removing the mouthguard from the hot water, you should put it on the upper jaw and bite down lightly so that the teeth of the upper and lower jaw are pressed into the material. Then you should suck up the remaining water from the mouthguard and try to press and shape the mouthguard tightly against the teeth with your fingers from the outside plus your thumb and tongue from the inside. The MX1 mouthguard is perfectly adaptable, not only because it has an optimal shape but also because it is quite thick and bulky. This allows you to press the mouthguard down with your fingers from the outside when fitting, so that part of the material also protects the teeth of the lower jaw well. There is also enough material on the inside so that the mouthguard can be pressed a little higher on the gums and even on the palate. The more contact surface the mouthguard has, the better the hold and protection.

4. Immediately after fitting, the mouthguard should be placed in a container of cold water and allowed to cool for a few minutes. After that it is ready for use.

5. If the mouthguard does not fit well after this procedure, you can usually repeat points 1 - 4 one or two more times before the mouthguard is too deformed to guarantee good protection.

* CARE - The mouth guard should be washed under running water after each training session and set aside to dry. After drying, it should always be stored in a designated box. It should never be exposed to direct sunlight because the sun could deform the mouthguard and damage the material. You should clean your mouthguard with a toothbrush and some toothpaste about every 10 training sessions. After about 100 training sessions you should throw away the mouthguard and buy a new one. The reason for this is that after so many uses, the mouth guard is usually a bit deformed and/or bitten through. If the mouthguard is dirty, the it implies that bacteria have collected on the mouthguard. Therefore, it is always safer and healthier to change your mouthguard more often.

Ein Zahnschutz ist vielleicht das wichtigste und notwendigste Element der Schutzausrüstung im Kampfsport weil eine Verletzung am Kiefer oder an den Zähnen sehr leicht passieren kann. So eine Verletzung kann leicht ausgeschlagene Zähne oder viel Schmerz und hohe Zahnarzt-Kosten mit sich bringne. Dabei sind solche Verletzungen aber sehr einfach, leicht und preiswert durch das Tragen eines Zahnschutzes zu vermeiden.

* FORM & MATERIAL - Der QUANTUM MX1 Zahnschutz ist aus einem sehr flexiblen Material hergestellt und die Form ist sehr voluminös ausgeformt, was genug Material für das genaue Anpassen jedes kleinsten Winkels des Gebisses ermöglicht. Er hat eine ergonomische Form, die sehr genau die Anatomie des Kiefers abbildet und sich dadurch perfekt an das Gebiss anformen lässt. Die zentrale Zahn-Rille ist im vorderen Bereich für extra schmal, was genau die Form der dünnen Vorder- und scharfen Schneidezähne abbildet. Hinten, im Bereich der Backzähne ist sie deutlich breiter, was unserer Kieferanatomie entspricht. Die Grundfläche zwischen Ober- und Unterkieferr ist auch extra dick. Das heißt, dass beim Anpassen, wenn man fest in den Zahnschutz beißt, trotzdem genug Material für die Zähne des Ober- und Unterkiefers vorhanden ist sich deutlich im Zahnschutz zu „verbeißen“. Ein tiefer Abdruck ist notwendig damit die Zähne stabil im Zahnschutz sitzen und bei einem Schlag die Kieferhälften nicht seitlich auseinanderrutschen. Das seitliche Verrutschen des Unterkiefers ist oft Grund für gefährliche Verletzungen der Muskeln und Bänder des Gebisses. Die Form dieses Zahnschutzes ist von außen dick genug, dass man einen Teil des flexiblen Materials beim Anpassen des Zahnschutzen (mit den Fingern) auf das Oberkiefer und nach oben teils sogar bis über das Zahnfleisch sowie nach unten auch auf die Zähne des Unterkiefers drücken kann um mehr Schutz zu erreichen. Je mehr Fläche vom Zahnschutz verdeckt wird, desto weniger spürt man die Kraft von einem Schlag, wenn er mal landet. Auch von innen ist das flexible Material dick genug um es beim Anpassen fest an die Zähne und teils sogar an das Zahnfleich drücken zu können. So genaues Drücken des Materials an das Kiefer ist sehr wichtig weil nur so der Zahnschutz sehr gut anliegt und auch beim Öffnen des Mundes nicht rausfällt. Je mehr Kontaktfläche der Zähnschutz mit den Zähnen, dem Zahnfleisch und teilweise sogar dem Gaumen hat und je enger und exakter er anliegt, desto sicherer ist er.

* ANPASSEN EINES ZAHNSCHUTZES – Ein neu gekaufter Zahnschutz hat nur eine grob vorgeformte und vorgebogene Form mit einer ausgesparten Rille für die Zähne des Oberkiefers. Er ist noch nicht fertig und einsatzbereit. Fast jeder Zahnschutz muss zuerst in sehr warmen Wasser aufgewärmt und anpassbar gemacht werden. Durch das Aufwärmen im heissem Wasser wird der Zahnschutz weich und flexibel und kann individuell an jedes Kiefer angelegt und durch das Drücken mit den Fingern an die eigene Gebissform angepasst werden. Obwohl fast jeder Zahnschutz eine genaue Anleitung hat wie die Anpassung gemacht sein sollte, bedarf es meistens mehrerer Versuche bis man einen Zahnschutz einigermaßen gut anpassen kann. Deswegen ist es für alle die das noch nie gemacht haben, empfehlenswert sich zuerst aus zuverlässigen Quellen und Videos zu informieren wie man einen Zahnschutz anpasst, welche wichtigen Schritte zu beachten sind und welche potenziellen Fehler man zu vermeiden hat. Zum Glück kann man einen Zahnschutz in der Regeln einige Male anpassen bevor er entweder gut passt oder so verformt ist, dass er nicht mehr gut verwendbar ist. Ein Rat von einem Händler eures Vertrauen oder einen erfahrenen Kämpfer oder Trainer (der viel Erfahrung im Anpassen von Zahnschützern hat) ist aber die beste Methode um dabei oft einfache Fehler zu vermeiden.

* ANPASSEN DES QUANTUM MX1 ZAHNSCHUTZES – Der Quantum MX1 Zahnschutz muss wie jeder andere Zahnschutz vor dem Tragen zuerst ans eigene Gebiss angepasst werden. Dabei sollte man folgendermaßen vorgehen und diese Schritte beachten:

1. Man sollte das Wasser am besten in einem Wassekocher zum Kochen bringen und es danach in einen kleinen Behälter gießen, wo der Zahnschutz reinpasst (z.B. eine Schüssel). Danach sollte man ca. 3-5 min. abwarten, bis die Wassertemperatur auf ca. 80-90° absinkt. Dann sollte man den Zahnschutz für etwa 60-90 Sekunden in das heiße Wasser legen.

Hinweis: Wenn der Zahnschutz sich im heißen Wasser deutlich verbogen und verformt hat, dann war er zu lange im Wasser oder das Wasser war zu heiß. Der Zahnschutz wird dann schwieriger anzupassen weil er zu biegsam und zu instabil wird. Wenn er aber nach dem Herausnehmen aus dem heißen Wasser so hart ist, dass er sich nicht per Druck an das Gebiss anpassen lässt, dann war er zu kurz im heißen Wasser oder das Wasser war zu kalt.

2. Während der Zahnschutz im heissem Wasser liegt um durch die Wärme flexibel und formbar für das Anpassen zu werden, könnte man den Mund mit warmen bis sehr warmen Wasser ausspülen um die Zähne für die bevorstehende Hize des Zahnschutzes vorzubereiten. Die Zähne sind nämlich sehr hitzeempfindlich und ohne diese Prozedur kann die ca. 80-90° hohe Zahnschutztemperatur beim Anpassen als schmerzhafter und unangenehmer Temperaturshock für die Zähne empfunden werden. Man muss dabei auch beachten, dass die Temperatur der Zahnschützer oft so hoch ist, dass man oft leichte Zahnfleischverbrennungen in Kauf nehmen muss.

Hinweis: Bei den Anleitungen vieler Hersteller für das Anpassen von Zahnschützern steht geschrieben, dass man den Zahnschutz gleich nach dem Herausnehmen aus dem heißen Wasse kurz unter kaltem Wasser abkühlen sollte um sich das Zahnfleich nicht zu verbrennen. Dieser Hinweis nimmt die Hersteller zwar aus der Verantwortung und man kann ihnen nicht vorwerfen, dass man sich den Mund verbrannt hat, aber sehr oft wird der Zahnschutz dabei zu kalt und zu hart und lässt sich dadurch nicht gut an das Gebiss abdrücken und anpassen. Das hat zur Folge, dass der Schutz und der Halt deutlich schlechter sind.

3. Gleich nach dem Herausnehmen des Zahnschutzes aus dem heißen Wasser sollte man ihn an das Oberkiefer anlegen und leicht zubeissen damit sich die Zähne vom Oberr- und Unterkieferin im Material abdrücken. Danach sollte man das restliche Wasser aus dem Zahnschutz einsaugen und mit den Fingern von außen plus dem Daumen und der Zunge von innen versuchen den Zahnschutz eng ans Gebiss anzudrücken und -formen. Der MX1 Zahnschutz ist perfekt anpassbar, nicht nur weil er eine optimale Form hat sondern auch weil er ziemlich dick und vpluminös ist. Dadurch kann man den Zahnschutz beim Anpassen mit den Fingern von außen nach unten drücken, sodass ein Teils des Material auch gut die Zähne des Unterkiefers schützt. Auch von innen ist genug Material vorhanden damit man den Zahnschutz etwas höher an das Zahnfleisch und sogar an den Gaumen andrücken kann. Je mehr Kontaktfläche der Zahnschutz hat, desto besser der Halt und der Schutz.

4. Gleich nach dem Anpassen sollte man den Zahnschutz in einem Behälter mit kaltem Wasser legen und ihn für ein paar Minuten abkühlen lassen. Danach ist er einsatzbereit.

5. Sollte der Zahnschutz nach dieser Prozedur nicht gut passen, dann kann man die Punkt 1 – 4 meist noch ein oder zwei mal wiederholen bevor der Zahnschutz zu stark verformt ist um guten Schutz zu garantieren.

* PFLEGE – Der Zahnschutz sollte nach jedem Trainig unter fließendem Wasser abgewaschen und zum Trocknen abgelegt werden. Nach dem Trocknen sollte er immer in einer vorgesehenen Dose aufbewahrt werden. Er sollte nie der direkten Sonnenstrahlung aussgesetzt werden weil die Sonne die den Zahnschutz verformen und das Material beschädigen könnte. Etwa alle 10 Trainingseinheiten sollte man den Zahnschutz mit einer Zahnbürste und etwas Zahnpasta reinigen. Nach etwa 100 Trainingeinheiten sollte man den Zahnschutz wegschmeißen und sich einen neuen kaufen. Der Grund dafür ist, dass der Zahnschutz nach so vielen Einsätzen meist etwas verformt und/order durgebissen ist. Bei seltener Zahnschutz-Hygiene kann es auch sein, dass sich Bakterien am Zahnschuzt gesammelt haben. Daher ist es immer sicherer und gesünder den Zahnschutz öfter zu wechseln.
